The starting point for the practical work was a selection of well-known paintings from the last century, in different styles. The unifying feature of the selected paintings was visual reproduction of a built context: a view of an urban space or single building, or else a depiction of an interior. The students were subsequently asked to transfer the two-dimensional images, characterised by fields and lines, to a spatial entity. The task was to interpret the paintings three-dimensionally by means of model making, reproducing them spatially with freely selected materials and via the use of colour. The participants thus analysed the paintings’ spatial arrangement of objects and their principles of perspective (including several inconsistencies and anomalies found in individual example paintings), as well as the ways in which the contours and surface textures were depicted and how these came across. The stylistic features of the individual works were to be transferred to the models as coherently as possible, before finally being returned to two-dimensionality as output images by means of photography. In addition to analysis of the selected paintings and description of their visually immanent properties, the aim was to encourage spatial imagination and to demonstrate possible scope for interpretation.
